New Year’s Eve in Madeira 2026/27: The Funchal fireworks and the best places to watch

When the ships’ horns in the harbour blast out at midnight and rockets rise all around the bay at once, you understand why so many people travel to Madeira for this one moment. Here’s everything you need to know about New Year’s Eve 2026/27 in Funchal – and why we prefer to stay at home for it.

New Year’s Eve in Funchal at a glance:

Why Funchal’s fireworks are so special

Funchal sits like an amphitheatre around its bay, with houses climbing the hillsides from the harbour. That’s exactly what makes the fireworks unique. They aren’t launched from one spot but from dozens of points at the same time – on the hillsides, along the promenade and from boats at sea. The whole city lights up at once, and wherever you stand, you’re right in the middle of it.

In 2006 Madeira’s New Year’s Eve fireworks entered the Guinness World Records as the largest in the world. Since then, New Year has been the biggest event of the year on the island. Last time around a dozen cruise ships lay in the bay. At midnight they sound their horns together with the twelve chimes of the cathedral bells – goosebumps guaranteed.

Our box seat: the roof terrace of Casa das Flores

Honestly, the best seat for the fireworks is right at home. From our roof terrace you see the fireworks perfectly – you’re practically in the middle of it, with the best view of the harbour and the whole city. No crowds on the promenade, no hunting for a taxi at two in the morning, You raise a glass up top, look out over the glittering bay – and after the show you’re only a few steps from bed.

New Year 2025/26: the little miracle of Funchal

We found out just how special this night is at the last New Year. Days beforehand, every forecast predicted a severe storm for New Year’s Eve: storm “Francis” was on its way, with a 90 percent chance of rain – and not just a few drops, but really heavy. The weather service issued a severe weather warning, the government even considered bringing the fireworks forward, and some concerts were cancelled.

The locals stayed calm all the same. “Don’t worry,” many Portuguese told us, “it doesn’t rain here on New Year’s Eve – it hasn’t for more than 25 years.” And what can I say: exactly an hour and a half before the fireworks, the rain stopped. We went up to the roof terrace with our guests, took the music box with us and partied until three in the morning. Only then did the rain come back.

And it wasn’t cold either: in recent years we’ve always been able to celebrate New Year in T-shirts.

Other good places to watch the fireworks

Seafront promenade and harbour pier: The best atmosphere, with a countdown show from around 23:40. But you’re right under the fireworks and in the crowds – for a good spot, arrive by about 22:00.

Parque de Santa Catarina: A good compromise between atmosphere and a view across the bay, just a few minutes from the old town.

Pico dos Barcelos: The viewpoint high above Funchal gives you the panorama over the whole “amphitheatre”. It gets busy, so come by around 21:00. You may know it from our hop-on hop-off tour.

From a boat: An experience in itself, but pricey – expect around €120 to €250 per person, and book several months ahead.

How to plan your New Year’s Eve

Read all about it in Christmas on Madeira. And for the festivals waiting for you in 2027, from Carnival to the Flower Festival, see our overview Madeira festivals 2026 & 2027.

All details without guarantee, as of October 2026, based on New Year 2025/26. The region publishes the exact 2026/27 programme shortly beforehand, e.g. at Events Madeira.

Would you like to welcome the New Year with a view over the whole bay? There’s very little left for New Year 2026/27. Book directly with us and you’ll get a small welcome basket with Madeira wine and honey cake.
