Welcome to Casa das Flores
Casa das Flores is our private home in Funchal. At Christmas 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, we only meant to spend four weeks on Madeira – and simply stayed. After two years in a small apartment in Funchal, we found our dream house in 2022 and restored it with a lot of love. Today we share our home and garden with guests from all over the world.
Three personally run guest rooms, a large terrace overlooking Funchal and the harbour, our two cats Momo & Silver and, if you like, a fresh breakfast basket in the morning — with us you don’t stay in an anonymous hotel, but right in the middle of our home. Funchal’s Old Town is a 20-minute walk downhill, and everything you need day to day is less than 10 minutes away. If you’d like to explore the island at your own pace, you can also borrow our small private car for €20 a day.
We speak German, English and Portuguese and usually reply within an hour.
“The guesthouse is run and furnished with great dedication and passion. The host prepares a varied, fresh breakfast with all her heart.”
“The owners are very kind and gave us so many helpful tips. The view from the terrace is beautiful.”
“The house is beautiful and lovingly decorated — breakfast on the terrace is the perfect start to the day.”

Frequently asked questions
The most important answers before your stay – everything else you’ll find in our digital guest guide after booking.
Where is Casa das Flores in Funchal and how far is it to the Old Town?
Casa das Flores is in the quiet residential neighbourhood of Santa Maria Maior, above Funchal on Madeira. From the house you have a wide view over the city all the way to the harbour.
Funchal’s Old Town and the Mercado dos Lavradores are about a 20-minute walk downhill. The way back up is steep, so many guests take Bolt, a taxi or the bus. As a guide: a Bolt ride costs about €5–7, a taxi around €8 and a bus ticket about €1.90.
A bakery, two supermarkets, a fruit and vegetable shop and the bus stop are around 10 minutes’ walk away. Madeira’s Botanical Garden is only about 300 metres from Casa das Flores. You’ll find our personal restaurant tips for Funchal in the guest guide.
Where is the best place to stay on Madeira – is Funchal a good base?
Funchal is ideal for a Madeira holiday that combines day trips with restaurants, markets and city life. You can explore many of the island’s highlights from one base and avoid changing accommodation and repacking your suitcase.
When choosing where to stay on Madeira, it’s also worth looking at the altitude: higher up it can be noticeably cooler and cloudier than on the coast.
Casa das Flores is located above Funchal’s city centre. Here you get a quiet residential setting and a view over the city, close to the Old Town. In summer we often find the temperatures up here more pleasant than right by the harbour.
How do I get from Madeira Airport to Casa das Flores, and where can I park?
From Madeira Airport, Casa das Flores in Funchal is about 20 minutes by car. You can use Bolt or Uber, for example; as a guide the ride costs about €15–20, depending on demand and time of day.
If you arrive by rental car, you can use the free public parking spaces above our house. The access road is very steep. To unload your luggage you can drive right up to the front door for a moment.
Do I need a rental car on Madeira?
For a stay in Funchal you don’t need a rental car. From Casa das Flores you can reach the city centre and the Old Town on foot, by bus or with Bolt.
If you want to do levada walks, visit the mountains or explore coastal trails, a rental car gives you more flexibility. You can plan your trips independently and stop spontaneously along the way.
If you like, you can also borrow our own small car for €20 a day. Just ask us.
Is breakfast available at Casa das Flores?
Yes – you can add a breakfast basket for €18 per person per day. It contains freshly baked bread and regional specialities from Madeira, and the selection changes daily.
We prepare breakfast on advance request. You pick up your basket between 8:00 and 10:30 am and can then enjoy breakfast on the terrace overlooking Funchal.
On request we also offer a vegetarian or gluten-free breakfast. If you’re setting off early for a hike, we’ll pack your breakfast basket as a lunch box to take with you.
When is the best time to visit Madeira and Funchal?
Thanks to its mild climate, Madeira is a great destination all year round. The best time for you depends on whether you mainly want to hike, explore the island or enjoy relaxed days in Funchal.
The weather on Madeira varies by region and altitude. The south coast around Funchal is often sunnier and drier than the north. In the mountains the weather can change quickly, so check the local forecast before every hike.
In summer it can get hot in Funchal’s city centre. Thanks to our location above the city, it’s often a little more pleasant up here.
Our personal tip is the Advent season, when the Christmas lights turn Funchal into a glowing city. Read more in our article on Christmas on Madeira.
Do I need to book hiking trails and levada walks on Madeira in advance?
Yes. Since 1 January 2026, the officially classified PR hiking trails on Madeira require an advance booking via the SIMplifica portal. These include, for example, PR6 (Levada das 25 Fontes) and PR1.2 (Vereda do Pico Ruivo).
For most of these trails the standard fee is €4.50 per person per route. On PR1, Vereda do Areeiro, the price depends on the section you choose: the full route from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo costs €10.50.
Before your hike, also check whether the trail is open, partly restricted or closed.
There are also beautiful hiking trails on Madeira away from the well-known PR routes. As local hosts we’re happy to give you personal tips and help you choose a hike that suits the weather and what you’re looking for.
You’ll find step-by-step instructions with a link to the official booking portal in our article Hiking on Madeira: trail bookings and alternatives to the Instagram hotspots.
